Break Week Experiences with Boulder Creek Academy

Boulder Creek Academy, a therapeutic boarding school that serves ages 13 through 18, weaves coeducational, fully accredited academics into a relationship-based therapy program and welcomes struggling students. Boulder Creek just completed an in-between terms break week experience. The student body that did not go on home visits got to experience activities that they may not have had the opportunity to participate in beforehand.
First on the list was the group who got to participate in the Native American experience with living historian, Cheyenne Elder, Gray Wolf. Trip coordinator, Troi Morris shares that, “this experience impacts the lives of the students who participated by exploring the concepts of the 7 gifts. Respect, humility, courage, generosity, truth, love and wisdom. The students define how these concepts relate to their personal lives. They experience Native American culture through shooting bows, throwing tomahawks, creating leatherwork projects. He ties these concepts together through showing how balance and small adjustments in your lives help you incorporate the 7 gifts. The week culminates with an authentic Native American sweat ceremony that the students may choose to participate in. During this time they have the opportunity to address goals they want to set for their lives, and learning to let go of negative experiences.” Students share that this week has profound impact on their journey, and one that they will never forget.
Next on the list of opportunities was the group who did the daily experiences such as mountain biking, a mountain bike skills course, horseback riding, gold mining, disc golf, hiking and a zip line adventure (that everyone tried at least one of the courses!) Clinical Director Lynn Marshall got to participate in this weeks’ events. “It’s a great opportunity for students to get out in the community, experience different interactions, challenge themselves, be physically active and have a ton of fun! It’s a week they will be talking about for quite a while.”
Finally, the students return to campus to share their adventures with one another, their families, take with them the new friendships forged, and all that has been learned and experienced into the new term ahead.
