Enhanced Academic Support at Red Mountain Sedona

Red Mountain Sedona provides more than mindfulness-based, therapeutic services to young adults, who struggle to meet the demands of life. Though mindfulness instruction is a crucial component of the Red Mountain program, helping students to re-engage with academics is another, often underestimated, strength of the program.
Just before the Fall 2021 semester, Red Mountain hired Gene Stevenson, MDiv, as the Academic Advisor for the Sedona-based transition program. Stevenson, who studied at Yale School of Divinity, has been working in higher education as an instructor and administrator for most of his adult life. He espouses a life-long love of learning and encourages as he says, “a learning spirit” in others.
Stevenson works with students who are working on high school completion, students who are already enrolled in college, and those who are interested in exploring a return to education. He provides needs assessments, interest assessments, assignment support, and academic advisement, including credit-transfer support. Additionally, he provides SAT and ACT test preparation.
As a doctoral student himself, he understands the demands students face as they regain their footing with school. On the other hand, he also understands that college is not a part of the journey for everyone. “I appreciate other paths as well and help students explore other ways of receiving education,” Stevenson said.
Along with providing academic encouragement and accountability, in addition to his other services, Stevenson helps students to understand their learning styles, strengths and challenges.
“I enjoy helping students to explore the boundary between ignorance and expertise,” Stevenson said. “Oftentimes being a fish out of water is the beginning of the opportunity to learn something new.”
