Equinox RTC Adds Alumni Family Transition Support Call for Parents

Equinox RTC, a residential treatment center for boys ages 14-18, has incorporated a transitional support call for parents of upcoming graduates in order to better prepare them for the next step of their child’s life after graduation.
One of the most overwhelming moments in treatment is when a family is preparing to welcome their child home. Often, a family will begin questioning all the work they and their child have done. At Equinox, clinicians added an alumni parent support call so that families could hear from former parents as they speak about their experience on how they supported their children returning home.
Parents of current students provided questions beforehand about their apprehensions and anxieties surrounding the return home. Primary Therapist Melissa Margolin, LCSW, moderated the call while alumni parents answered questions and spoke about their experiences. Some of the topics discussed included boundary setting, home agreements, and parenting styles pre and post-treatment.
“It’s really helpful for families to talk through their anxiety around the transition home,” Melissa said. “Having someone else who has been through the same thing and done it successfully helps parents put together their game plan for life after treatment and know they aren’t alone.”
The clinical team plans to offer the transitional support call to groups of parents as they approach program completion. Equinox looks forward to continuing to help families overcome their challenges and find the healing they need.
