Equinox RTC Expands Test Preparation for SAT/ACT

Equinox RTC, a residential treatment center for teen boys ages 14-18, expands their standardized testing preparation for students as they see an increase in enrollment of 11th and 12th graders.
Academic reengagement, progress, and success are a priority at Equinox. Many students arrive at Equinox struggling in school but once they have settled into the supportive Equinox classroom and developed trusting relationships with their teachers, they begin to see significant improvement in their grades and progress and feel hopeful again. They start to look towards the future and what comes after high school.
Equinox’s academic department knows the importance of starting early in the preparation for college admissions standardized testing. A student’s 11th-grade year is the most impactful year for a student to take the SAT/ACT. Equinox utilizes Khan Academy’s test prep materials, which is the College Board’s official online test prep program. Students have unlimited access to official ACT/SAT preparation books and other printed materials in their dorms, as well. The Academic Director at Equinox sets time aside each week during study halls for test practice and assigns additional SAT/ACT prep work on weekends. Parents are also updated regularly regarding their child’s progress in preparing for these tests.
Students regularly take full-length practice tests and their scores are analyzed by their subject-area teachers. Teachers and students then discuss both areas of strength and improvement. Teachers then make a plan for targeting those areas of improvement through study guides and further practice tests. Students are also given guidance for general test anxiety and time management during testing.
The Academic Director works with parents to schedule the SAT/ACT test at a local testing center. Transportation is then arranged for students, and a staff member helps them prepare for the test on the morning of, drives them to the testing center, and waits onsite for them to complete their testing. After the test, students then have the opportunity to debrief with staff and their teachers. After scores are received, the student and teachers plan if retesting is recommended.
