Fly Fishing at EVNSQ with Primary Therapist James Silvestri, CSW

Primary Therapist James Silvestri, CSW shares his passion for fly fishing with EVNSQ clients while they are in Primary Treatment. James spends quality time with clients throughout the Wasatch Front and greater Utah landscape while utilizing outings as a way to connect on a deeper level, outside of a traditional therapeutic setting. James notes that “fly fishing builds a bond that is difficult to recreate in any setting. When a guy gets a fish on the line, there is a moment of joy and excitement that we get to share together. This expands upon the relationship that we build during our therapeutic work and adds a layer of depth that may be difficult to tap into otherwise.”
While fly fishing with James, clients must stay grounded and focused on what is directly in front of them, which can be difficult to do in one’s daily life. It allows these newly sober individuals to practice patience and move away from their focus on instant gratification and control while allowing nature to decide their outcome. Rather than immediately falling in love with the activity, clients experience the difficulty that comes with taking time to prep, drive, hike, fish, and wait — all before experiencing the rush of having a fish on the other side of a line.
About Balance House
Balance House is a year-long continuum of care for young men ages 18-35 years old. We are located in Salt Lake City, Utah at the base of the Wasatch Mountains. Balance House offers four, distinct levels of care from residential treatment to independent, sober living. Residents of the program are offered a chance to explore the outdoors, and beauty that Utah has to offer, as well as to participate in group and evidenced-based treatment modalities. Our treatment program is different by design. We offer a space in which young men can help make decisions about their treatment plans and goals as well as feel supported as they begin to realize what is important to them outside of the treatment setting.
