Cornerstones Of Maine To Present At Upcoming Autism Symposium

Joshua Altschule, Psy.D. and Eric Beaudoin, Psy.D. have been accepted to present at the upcoming Autism Symposium. Dr. Altschule is the Co-Founder and Dr. Beaudoin serves as Executive Director at Cornerstones of Maine, a young adult transitional living program located in Southern Maine. In their presentation titled PDA vs. Pathological Narcissism: A Differential Diagnosis, they will define Pathological Demand Avoidance (also referred to as Persistent Drive for Autonomy) and Pathological Narcissism. Subsequently, they will explore the similarities and differences, provide treatment implications, and offer a space for questions and discussion.

PDA, also known as Pathological Demand Avoidance or Persistent Drive for Autonomy, can present quite similarly to narcissistic rage and defiance. While they share some similar traits and behaviors, their etiologies might be quite different. Through a review of diagnostic criteria, case studies, and critical thinking, the goal of Dr. Altschule and Dr. Beaudoin’s presentation is to identify how PDA and NPD contrast. A focus on treatment implications for each will be explored to identify best practices and interventions. The audience will be challenged to consider alternate ways when working with PDA while being encouraged to explore questions and take part in an open discussion.

The Autism Symposium is taking place April 29th through May 1st in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire at the beautiful Omni Mount Washington Resort. The Symposium is taking place one month after Cornerstones of Maine opens a new neuro-affirming program, Catalyst. Dr. Altschule and Dr. Beaudoin look forward to sharing their knowledge and connecting with fellow mental health professionals.
