Discover Seven Stars Launches Specialized PDA Track for Neurodiverse Adolescents

Discover Seven Stars is proud to announce the launch of its new Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) Track: a specialized clinical pathway designed to support teens experiencing significant demand avoidance, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation.

Seven Stars serves neurodivergent adolescents ages 13–18 through an integrated model that combines residential treatment, specialized academics, and experiential learning to foster growth across emotional, social, and academic domains. The addition of the PDA Track reflects the program’s continued evolution in meeting the complex needs of neurodiverse students, including those with autism spectrum profiles, executive functioning challenges, and anxiety-related conditions.

A Different Approach for a Unique Profile

Pathological Demand Avoidance is increasingly recognized as a profile in which traditional compliance-based or behaviorally driven interventions can be ineffective or even counterproductive. For these students, resistance is not rooted in defiance, but in a heightened nervous system response to perceived demands.

“Students with PDA are often misunderstood,” said Rachelle Manco, LCSW, Clinical Director at Seven Stars. “When we shift from control-based approaches to connection-based care, we see meaningful engagement and lasting change.”

Introducing the RELATE Model

At the core of the PDA Track is Seven Stars’ RELATE Model, a relationship-centered framework that informs every aspect of care from therapeutic interventions to daily interactions.

  • R – Relationship
Building trust and connection as the foundation for growth

  • E – Empathy
Understanding each student’s internal experience with compassion and validation

  • L – Lower Demands
Reducing perceived pressure to decrease anxiety and resistance

  • A – Adjust
Flexing expectations and approaches to meet individual needs

  • T – Time
Respecting pacing and allowing progress to unfold naturally

  • E – Environment
Creating spaces that promote safety, regulation, and autonomy

This model aligns with Seven Stars’ broader therapeutic philosophy, which integrates evidence-based care, experiential learning, and individualized support to help students build resilience and self-efficacy.

Supporting Regulation, Not Resistance

The PDA Track is designed to:

  • Reduce power struggles between students and caregivers

  • Increase felt safety and emotional regulation

  • Foster authentic engagement in therapy and academics

  • Support long-term resilience and adaptive functioning

Seven Stars has long specialized in supporting students who experience dysregulation in academic and social environments, providing tools that allow them to re-engage in learning and relationships at their own pace.

A Natural Extension of a Neurodiverse-Focused Program

The introduction of the PDA Track builds on Seven Stars’ established expertise in working with neurodevelopmental differences, including autism, ADHD, and learning disorders. The program’s multidisciplinary approach includes:

  • Individual, group, and family therapy

  • Occupational and speech-language therapy

  • Psychiatric and medical support with 24/7 nursing

  • Small, therapeutic classroom settings with individualized instruction

  • Experiential and outdoor-based learning opportunities

By embedding the RELATE Model into this already comprehensive structure, Seven Stars offers a uniquely responsive environment for students who have not found success in more traditional treatment settings.
