Emerald Arrow at Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness Introduces Evolutions to Model and Programming
Emerald Arrow, an outdoor therapeutic treatment program located in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, was launched by Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness in 2018 to support young adults and their families in navigating the challenges associated with emerging adulthood. In Emerald Arrow, young adults ages 18-28 are provided opportunities to experience deep personal therapeutic work and lasting, sustainable change through nature-based interventions, daily mindfulness practices, creative exploration, community engagement, and comprehensive transition preparation.
Since 2021, students have returned from the outdoors every other week to Anchor Point, Emerald Arrow’s student retreat property for personal development intensives, rest, and reflection between backpacking expeditions. At Anchor Point, young adults utilize accommodations on the 120-acre property to take hot showers, meet professional guest speakers, participate in creative intensives, and learn transferable skills that foster confidence and independence.
What's New
Young adults in Emerald Arrow now spend every Monday through Thursday at Anchor Point. After embarking on backpacking trips over long weekends, clients return to the beautiful 120-acre retreat property to utilize the cabins, commercial kitchen, hot showers, and bathrooms while participating in versatile program offerings.
Recognizing the talent and passion of young adults who attend the program, Emerald Arrow has also enhanced adventure programming to enrich students’ sense of purpose and motivation as they work through their student pathway. In addition to basketball, frisbee golf, archery, and yoga, students will have the opportunity to participate in fly fishing, equine therapy, and other activities they are interested in on an individualized basis.
Updated programming also includes archery lessons, cooking classes in Anchor Point’s commercial kitchen, professional development workshops with computer access, and activities such as bow drilling, spoon carving, woodworking, carpentry, and trail work.
