Gateway Academy is excited to announce the launch of its new Transition Support Program, designed to ensure students' continued success as they transition to home, college, or boarding school. Transitions are critical for a student’s continued success, and Gateway has always provided excellent support for families preparing for these changes. These services are offered in-house through a more comprehensive program designed and facilitated by our Director of Clinical and Parent Support, Julie Barbero, LCSW, and our Clinical Director, Boston Bushnell, LCSW.
Starting ten to twelve weeks before discharge, Gateway teams come together to discuss the needs and desires of each child and family and the necessary tasks to be completed during this period. The program includes six weekly groups that assist parents in creating their portion of the Sustainability Plan. Each week, the groups focus on one or two areas of the plan, while students work on these areas during weekly groups and individual therapy. Family Therapy sessions bring students and parents together to discuss, compromise, and solidify each section of the plan.
Additional groups are provided after the Sustainability Plans are completed to offer clarity and support. Some students may already be home, and parents are encouraged to join and discuss how the transition progresses. Therapeutic support continues after students return home, with two therapy sessions available within the first four weeks after discharge. While the transition to the home therapist is happening, Gateway teams are available to lend support and answer any questions related to behaviors or challenges. Parents also receive a number of resources and readings and are encouraged to take advantage of Gateway’s partnership with Other Parents Like Me for added support.
In addition to clinical support, Gateway’s Academic Director, Casie Buckner-Munteanu, works closely with the receiving school to ensure all accommodations, social-emotional supports, and special interests are considered and planned before school starts.
