How Ready Are They for Independence? Get a Better IDEA

NeuroDev Labs has launched the IDEA Inventory — the Inventory for the Development of Emerging Adults — a new tool designed to help individuals, families, and professionals better understand the developmental factors that contribute to a neurodivergent teen or young adult's readiness for college, work, or greater independence. The IDEA looks across 10 areas of development that contribute to independence and self-reliance, helping identify strengths, developmental gaps, and areas where additional support may have the greatest impact.

The IDEA grew out of more than a decade of NeuroDev's work mentoring neurodivergent young adults and a pattern the team saw again and again: readiness can be surprisingly difficult to gauge. One young person may have strong grades but struggle with executive functioning or daily living skills, while another may manage well at home but still be developing in areas such as social connection, identity, or self-direction. The IDEA brings those areas together with the young person's own perspective and observations from parents and professionals, creating a broader picture of development and a shared way to identify needed supports before the next step. It also includes a developmental scoring framework that helps explain why a young person may be stuck, not just what is happening, giving families and professionals a clearer starting point for support.

"Families and professionals can see a young person doing well in some areas and struggling in others and still wonder what to do next," said Jason Grygla, MA, LCMHC, co-founder of NeuroDev Labs. "After years of mentoring neurodivergent young adults, we saw how often the skills people focus on most aren't necessarily connected to the areas that needed the most development. The IDEA gives everyone a clearer, shared picture so they can identify strengths, see the gaps, and make better-informed decisions about where to focus next. We don't want families waiting for a hard semester or a rough first year on their own to find out a young person wasn't fully ready — the goal is to see that picture clearly ahead of time, while there's still time to prepare."

The IDEA Inventory is now available to individuals and families for $29 per profile, and qualified professionals — including therapists, educational consultants, and school counselors — can apply for a free professional dashboard to use the IDEA with the teens and young adults they support. Because readiness develops over time, many families and professionals choose to retake the IDEA every four to six months to track progress and see how needs shift. Learn more at NeuroDevLabs.com.
