Black Pines Celebrates Milestones With Student Graduation and New Enrollments

Black Pines kicked off the new year by marking an important milestone: one student successfully completed the program and transitioned to independent living. The graduate has moved into his own apartment near the Black Pines home in Cottonwood Heights and is continuing to work in Salt Lake City while attending SLIC, where he is pursuing a career in the electrical trades. This transition reflects the program’s core purpose of helping young men take practical, accountable steps toward independence while remaining connected to structure and support.

January also brought growth to the Black Pines community with the arrival of two new students. Both have secured employment shortly after entering the program and are actively moving through orientation while beginning work across the six pillars. Early progress has been strong, with each student responding well to routines, expectations, and the emphasis on personal responsibility that defines the Black Pines approach.

“Our focus has never been about quick bursts of motivation,” said Kolby Kimball, Founder and Head of Program at Black Pines. “Motivation is short-term. Discipline is what creates lasting change. When young men learn how to show up consistently, even on the days they do not feel like it, that is when real growth starts to happen.” This philosophy is reflected in the current pillar focus on Health and Wellness, where students work with a personal trainer to develop sustainable nutrition habits, basic workout programming, and long-term health strategies.

About Black Pines:

Black Pines is a Utah-based transitional living program that supports young men ages 18 to 25 who are struggling to transition to independent adulthood. Through mentorship, therapeutic support, life-skills training, and real-world accountability, Black Pines helps students build discipline, confidence, and the practical skills needed for long-term independence. The program operates with a small, intentional cohort model to ensure individualized attention and meaningful outcomes.
