Second Nature is delighted to announce that Jamie Kaczmarek, LCSW, has joined its team as primary therapist.
Jamie has worked in nature-based therapy for more than 24 years, focusing on adolescents and families. She is passionate about the benefits of therapy in a natural setting and has presented nationally on the topic. Moreover, she has taken current research and adapted therapeutic interventions, and created new programming to meet the changing needs of today’s families and students.
“Second Nature has invited me to work with females, which is something I am looking forward to doing again. I will still occasionally work with male students, if that makes sense, but my focus will now be on working with females who present uniquely different than boys. Girls truly benefit from a nature-based approach that allows them to slow down, become secure in themselves, and ultimately understand who they are without being smothered by influences such as social media,” explained Kaczmarek.
“Jamie has made such a name for herself in the nature-based treatment field, and I am delighted that she has joined our team and for her willingness to shift back to working with females,” explained Devan Glissmeyer, Ph.D., Second Nature co-founder and primary therapist who continues to work directly with students in the field as he has for more than 25 years.
“I’m so excited for the opportunity to join the Second Nature team. They are a standard bearer with a long history of clinical sophistication in nature-based treatment. Everyone is super welcoming and as passionate as I am about the powerful change that happens for students and families who engage in nature-based treatment,” said Kaczmarek.
Jamie earned her master’s degree in Clinical Social Work at the University of Utah. She holds an undergraduate degree in Outdoor Recreation with an emphasis in Environmental Education from Indiana University. In her formative years, she trained at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in leadership and team dynamics with an experiential adventure focus.
As Second Nature welcomes Jamie, Dr. Fred Peipman will take a winter break to accommodate his snowy commute. The program will still enroll students into his group for another week or two before winding down his caseload, and he plans to resume his group in the spring. The Second Nature team can continue to support gender diversity in Fred’s absence, plus he is always readily available to support with his clinical insight.
“We are so grateful to Fred, who started the first nature-based all-gender group and who has for years been traveling each week from the Bay Area to Utah to work with our gender-diverse students. He has done such incredible work on behalf of our students and families, and we value him so much,” said Dr. Glissmeyer.
