Lumen Surpasses 70% Employment Rate Among Students Enrolled Longer Than Three Months

Lumen recently reached an important milestone in its vocational programming: 71% of students who have been enrolled longer than three months are currently employed at least part-time. At a time when neurodiverse young adults continue to face disproportionately high rates of unemployment and underemployment, this benchmark reflects Lumen’s belief that meaningful work should be a central component of transition programming rather than simply a long-term outcome. Employment provides opportunities to build confidence, develop social communication skills, strengthen executive functioning, and gain a sense of purpose through meaningful contribution.

Despite the clear benefits of employment, workforce participation remains a significant challenge for many neurodiverse young adults. Research consistently shows individuals on the autism spectrum experience some of the highest rates of unemployment among disability groups. Barriers such as social communication differences, executive functioning challenges, sensory sensitivities, and traditional hiring processes often prevent capable individuals from accessing meaningful employment opportunities. Yet many young neurodiverse young adults express a strong desire to work and contribute, highlighting the importance of programs that provide practical skill development, workplace experience, and individualized support.

At Lumen, employment support is integrated into the program’s in vivo model, allowing students to develop workplace skills through real-world experiences rather than simulated environments. Students receive individualized support with job exploration, resume development, interviewing, workplace communication, and ongoing coaching. For students who benefit from a slower pace, increased one-to-one support, and additional opportunities for repetition, Lumen’s Pathways program provides enhanced coaching while maintaining the same experiential, community-based approach.

“Employment offers something that cannot be replicated in a classroom, therapy office, or coaching session,” said Jason Cox, Chief Experience Officer at Lumen. “It provides young adults with an opportunity to discover their strengths, contribute to something meaningful, and develop a sense of identity beyond being a student or a client. Through employment, students learn to navigate challenges, build relationships, take responsibility, and experience the pride that comes from knowing they are capable of more than they may have believed. Those experiences often become turning points in the journey toward greater confidence and independence.”

“The workplace provides countless opportunities for young adults to develop confidence, responsibility, communication skills, and resilience,” added Jeremy Noles, LCSW, Director of Clinical Services at Lumen. “Many neurodiverse young adults have the ability to succeed in employment when provided with the right support and opportunities to practice. We view employment as one of the most powerful tools for helping students build the skills necessary for long-term independence.”
