Momentum Young Adult Announces Evolutionary Student And Data Driven Changes

In bold moves to redefine therapeutic gap experiences for young adults, Momentum has implemented significant programmatic changes tailored to meet its participants' evolving needs. Recognizing the ongoing shifts in young adult mental health and comfort zones, Momentum has strategically reimagined its outdoor and community wellness offerings. Here are some key takeaways: Momentum's Prior Design
  • 40% of activities were campus-based.
  • 60% of programming was dedicated to outdoor, adventure-based activities.
  • Programming was strictly employee-designed.
  • There was a strict policy excluding digital devices.
  • Students were given program-required clothing and gear.
Momentum Young Adult Today
  • 70% or more of activities are campus-based.
  • 30% of activities are nature-based and are entirely optional.
  • A Challenge-by-Choice model allows each young adult to choose their own adventure.
  • Intentional Tech Integration supports the practice of building a healthy balance with technology.
  • Students can bring their own clothing and gear based on staff suggestions.
Central to Momentum’s refreshed approach is the implementation of "Intentional Tech Integration," a drastic shift from its previous tech-free policy. Momentum has built scaffolded tech programming and provides students with Apple watches upon admission. This programming encourages students to adopt a healthier, balanced relationship with technology, using it as a tool to support mental and physical wellness. This shift acknowledges the pivotal role technology plays in our modern lives and aims to teach students to leverage it positively. Another significant highlight of Momentum's impactful adaptations is its "Challenge-by-Choice" model, which allows students to tailor their experiences according to their personal readiness and interests. This model emphasizes voluntary participation, empowering students with autonomy over their therapeutic journeys within a supportive community. Staff encourage students to stay in their growth zone, avoid overwhelm, and provide participants with the tools and skill-learning opportunities to succeed in all activities. With input from its young adult community, Momentum has also diversified its adventure offerings. Once mandatory, wilderness excursions have now become optional, allowing students to choose activities that resonate with their interests and comfort levels. Including campus-based outdoor activities, like disc golf and equine rehabilitation, further ensures that every student finds their unique path to growth and self-discovery within the campus’ natural setting. “At Momentum, we want to help students discover and maintain their personal growth zone,” shared Jolene McGuire, Admissions Director. “Our evolved program not only aligns with the current needs of young adults but also equips them with the tools they need for a successful life ahead.” Momentum welcomes young adults and their families to explore these updates and start conversations with the team about what other offerings they'd like to see in a therapeutic gap experience.   About Momentum Momentum is a challenge-by-choice gap experience in western North Carolina that empowers young adults between the ages of 18-25 to independently make meaningful changes in their lives. Using nature and adventure as a catalyst for change, interwoven with clinical services, family involvement, college coursework, and more, young adults boost self-confidence, assimilate important life skills, and develop healthy coping skills needed to thrive in all areas of their lives.
