For more than 25 years, Second Nature has transformed nature-based therapy through its extensive network of semi-permanent base campsites in the Fall-Spring field area. These base camps, dispersed across a wide region, offer groups the flexibility to hike to different locations, creating a dynamic and engaging experience that promotes adventure, independence, and novelty, unlike the traditional base camp models.
“Instead of being confined to one or two locations where students can easily become bored, impatient, and complacent, our groups can take full advantage of the diversity of our large field area. This approach offers all the advantages of adventure, independence, self-reliance, and the innovative, nature-based therapy that Second Nature pioneered without the limitations of feeling confined and restricted as can often be found in more traditional "base camp" models,” explained Clinical Director Steve DeBois, Ph.D.
Each base camp features a spacious wall tent furnished with tables and chairs, where students gather to play games, participate in arts and crafts, and share meals. Each tent is warmed by a wood-burning stove, while the base camp also offers a heated shower tent and plenty of space for group therapy and other activities. This setup provides a safe and comfortable environment, allowing participants to engage fully in immersive therapeutic experiences. The base camp network strikes an ideal balance between comfort and security, particularly during the cooler months, as students work on addressing the root causes of their behavioral and mental health challenges. In this supportive setting, they build resilience, self-sufficiency, and meaningful connections, fostering personal growth through ongoing exploration and self-reflection.
Second Nature provides a powerful balance of safety, comfort, and clinical sophistication by combining the flexibility of multiple locations with the stability of well-equipped basecamps. Students cultivate resilience, self-sufficiency, and connection in a setting that continuously promotes exploration and reflection. Second Nature’s approach ensures that participants receive the full benefits of immersive, nature-based therapy without the limitations of a static environment.
