Solstice Welcomes Special Education Teacher Vonnie Douglass M Ed

Solstice RTC has welcomed the addition of Vonnie Douglass, M.Ed., a special education teacher, to its distinguished academic team. With two master's degrees, one in Education Curriculum and the other in Special Education, Douglass boasts an impressive academic background and a wealth of experience.

Originally a high school chemistry and geometry teacher, Douglass transitioned into the role of a research chemist credited for aiding in the development of Crisco cooking spray. A call-out for substitute teachers from her children's charter school led her back to the classroom, specifically special education. With interest ignited for this specialized work, Douglass pursued her master's degrees to continue supporting students requiring extra academic assistance.

On joining Solstice RTC, Douglass said, "This past year, I had a student who could have used a higher level of care and wasn’t getting it. Being on the other side where we can see kids getting the help they need and having their parents support the process is huge."   At Solstice RTC, Douglass will teach study skills, executive functioning, and a college prep class. She will also step into math and science classrooms to assist students who need it, including those with IEPs, reinforcing Solstice's commitment to providing extensive academic support.

Jaime Murphy, Academic Director and Science Teacher at Solstice, shared, "Overall, our students like coming to school and are motivated to do well and work towards graduation. For many students, school is their favorite part of the day! We excel at maintaining high academic standards, with added support for those who need it. We can accommodate different learning styles and work on special education needs. Students will learn executive functioning skills and advocating skills. We are also able to help students work on higher-level academic needs. We offer honors, AP, and concurrent enrollment courses through Apex Learning and Southern Utah University."

Solstice RTC has always prioritized academics, reflected in its full accreditation by Cognia and recognition as a non-public school by the education boards of Utah, California, and Washington. Their high standards in therapeutic programming and successful partnerships with school districts continue to develop valuable opportunities for families to fund treatment.

With Douglass's arrival, Solstice RTC continues to develop its rich academic classroom environment. Douglass's experience adds value to a strong educational team that excels at delivering personalized and high-quality education to students in their care.
