Solstice West Replaces Phase-Based Model with Competency-Based 3B Clinical Framework

Solstice West RTC has implemented a revised clinical framework designed to improve clarity, consistency, and developmental accuracy in treatment planning and transition readiness. The updated milestone model, Believe. Begin. Become. (3B Milestones), is guided by the program’s EnRICH rubric, which organizes clinical observation and care alignment across four domains: Relationships, Influence, Character, and Health.

The 3B framework replaces traditional phase and level-based systems with a competency-based, developmentally descriptive approach. Progress is assessed through cross-disciplinary observation across therapy, academics, family work, and daily living contexts. Advancement reflects consistent regulation, relational trust, and functional readiness, rather than symbolic status or the attainment of privilege. Domain milestone designation is intentionally decoupled from privileges; increased autonomy follows demonstrated readiness and relational trust, not milestone labels.

This implementation aligns with widely endorsed principles of youth psychiatric care, emphasizing individualized assessment, clinically indicated intensity, and treatment matched to the least restrictive setting appropriate to need. It also reflects established trauma-informed standards that prioritize safety, collaboration, empowerment, and generalization of skills beyond structured environments.

Consistent with contemporary quality improvement and implementation science, Solstice West’s framework is designed to strengthen measurement discipline and transition readiness by grounding clinical decisions in observable competencies across settings.

Students may demonstrate growth unevenly across domains, and the framework allows for differentiated pacing that reflects normative developmental variability. Setbacks are conceptualized as clinically informative data rather than failure, consistent with relapse-prevention and developmental resilience models.

Solstice West remains a clinically intensive residential program serving adolescents experiencing process addictions and substance-related coping patterns rooted in trauma exposure, attachment disruption, mood and anxiety disorders, and loss. Treatment integrates trauma-focused therapies, regulation-based skills training, addictions programming, structured family involvement, and academic support within a unified developmental framework.

The implementation of the 3B Milestones reflects an ongoing commitment to transparency in clinical measurement, developmentally informed care, and preparation for sustainable transition beyond residential treatment.
