In a groundbreaking move, mental health professionals led by Lexy Spett, LMFT, are spearheading a shift in the narrative surrounding the troubled teen industry (TTI). The term “troubled teen industry,” long associated with stigma and oversimplification, needs to be updated to reflect the enhanced clinical work offered in legitimate, therapeutic teen programs across the country - a more holistic approach focused on family systems.
The conventional label, “the so-called troubled teen industry,” has been criticized by those on the frontlines in legitimate teen treatment programs for its tendency to generalize diverse programs and undermine the complexities of current teen struggles. Spett emphasizes that such terminology overlooks the underlying familial dynamics contributing to these issues, framing the conversation more nuancedly.
“It’s time to recognize that a ‘troubled teen’ is often a manifestation of deeper family system challenges,” Spett remarks. “This isn’t just about individual teens; it’s about addressing familial dysfunction comprehensively.”
The messaging initiative highlights the pivotal role of family systems-focused interventions in addressing teen mental health. Legitimate, therapeutic programs, such as stabilization & assessment programs, wilderness therapy programs, and therapeutic boarding schools/residential treatment, are reframed as part of the “field of family systems-focused residential treatment,” emphasizing the importance of holistic, family-centered approaches.
Spett’s extensive experience in therapeutic consulting underscores the need for a paradigm shift in language and perception. “Our work is not an ‘industry.’ We do not view families as commodities,” she asserts. “This is about honoring the whole family’s journey and providing genuine support.”
Family systems-focused residential treatment aims to offer more dynamic, tailored interventions, including family therapy, parent coaching, and multi-family support groups. By embracing this new message, mental health professionals hope to foster a deeper understanding of the current interconnectedness between teen struggles and family dynamics.
Spett states, “This is a very different conceptualization of teen treatment than the programs from the ’90s and early 2000s had. Programs today are fostering attachment within families. Treatment plans and interventions are being developed from the point of view that the family is the primary client, not just the teen enrolled in the program.”
With a commitment to healing and a primary focus on family systems, this shift marks a significant step towards destigmatizing and redefining teen residential treatment.
As the conversation evolves, Spett Therapeutic Consulting remains resolute in its family systems approach to therapeutic consulting, offering unbiased assessments and individualized solutions for families nationwide and internationally.
