Ten Years of Black Mountain Academy: A Decade of Growth, Support, and Community

This year, Black Mountain Academy celebrates ten years of helping students and their families find their footing - academically, relationally, and personally. What began as a vision for a different kind of school immersed in its local community has grown into a thriving program rooted in a simple belief: students achieve their greatest success when rigorous academics are paired with individualized, wraparound support and a genuine sense of belonging.

At the heart of our mission is a commitment to meeting students where they are while challenging them to discover what they're capable of becoming. Every student arrives with unique strengths, challenges, and goals. Through individualized instruction, clinical support, and intentional mentoring, we help students build confidence, develop resilience, and gain the skills needed to navigate school, relationships, and life with increasing independence.

Our academic program is designed to do more than prepare students for graduation. It cultivates intellectual curiosity while strengthening the executive functioning, self-advocacy, and social skills that support long-term success in college, careers, and adulthood. Learning doesn't end when classes are over. Our clinical and residential teams work alongside our teachers to create a collaborative, therapeutic environment where emotional well-being, healthy relationships, and independent living skills are woven into everyday life. We know students learn best when they feel supported, connected, and challenged in meaningful ways.

That learning extends beyond our campus and into the community of Black Mountain. Over the past decade, students have become active participants in the life of our community - working out at the YMCA, exploring local parks and trails, spending afternoons at the public library, hanging out at local coffee shops and ice cream shops, volunteering with local organizations, and gaining real-world skills through experiential learning trips, internships, and part-time jobs. These everyday moments foster confidence, responsibility, and connection while giving students the opportunity to practice the skills they're learning in real-life settings. The community of Black Mountain is more than the location of our school; it is an essential partner in our students' and families’ growth.

The spirit of community extends beyond the town itself. Throughout the past ten years, we've built lasting relationships with families, referral partners, and organizations that share our commitment to helping young people thrive. Together, we've celebrated milestones both large and small, supported students through challenges, and watched our graduates carry the confidence and skills they developed here into college, careers, and independent adulthood.

As we celebrate this milestone, we're grateful for every student, family, staff member, alumni, and community partner who has been part of Black Mountain Academy's story. While much has changed over the past decade, our purpose remains the same: to provide a place where students are known, challenged, supported, and inspired to discover their potential. We look forward to the next chapter with the same heart that guided our first - helping young people build lives of confidence, connection, and purpose.

About Black Mountain Academy:

Located just outside Asheville, North Carolina, Black Mountain Academy is a specialized boarding school dedicated to empowering students whose academic, social, and executive function challenges have previously hindered them from reaching their full potential. By integrating academic rigor with clinical support and comprehensive life-skills development, we cultivate an environment in which students build self-confidence and independence through community immersion and meaningful real-world experience. Our commitment to growth extends beyond the classroom into our local community. Since our inception in 2016, students and staff have contributed over 10,000 hours of service to local organizations and causes with a direct, positive impact. Through weekly service opportunities, our students cultivate empathy and social perspective while developing essential life skills grounded in a genuine sense of purpose and meaning.
