The Power of Community: Confluence Highlights the Role of Connection in Young Adult Growth and Recovery
THETFORD & BURLINGTON, Vermont — Confluence, a provider of residential and community-based services for young adults navigating mental health and life-transition challenges, is highlighting the critical role that community plays in fostering growth, resilience, and long-term success. Over the past month, participants across Confluence programs have engaged in a variety of shared experiences designed to strengthen relationships, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging. The initiative reflects the organization's belief that meaningful personal development is strengthened through connection with others and active participation in a supportive community.
Young adulthood is often marked by significant life changes, including increased independence, educational and career decisions, evolving family relationships, and questions about identity and purpose. These transitions can contribute to feelings of isolation and disconnection. In response, Confluence intentionally incorporates community-building opportunities across its residential program in Thetford, Vermont; its transitional living program in Burlington, Vermont; and its outpatient counseling services. Through shared activities, peer support, structured group experiences, and community engagement, participants are encouraged to develop communication skills, strengthen resilience, and practice healthy relationships in real-world settings.
Community-building efforts at Confluence are integrated into everyday life rather than reserved for special events. During the past month, participants have prepared meals together, explored local hiking trails, gone canoeing, celebrated academic and personal milestones, participated in group activities, and spent time engaging with the Burlington community. These experiences help create opportunities for collaboration, mutual support, and personal growth while reinforcing the understanding that challenges do not have to be faced alone.
"Community provides the foundation for lasting growth," said Olivia Therrien, Admissions Director at Confluence. "When young adults feel connected, supported, and valued, they are better positioned to build confidence, navigate challenges, and create meaningful lives. The relationships formed through shared experiences often become an important part of the progress they continue to make long after completing a program."
For families, educators, healthcare professionals, and referral partners, community can play a significant role in sustaining progress beyond formal treatment. While professional support helps individuals develop new skills and strategies, healthy relationships and supportive networks create opportunities to apply those skills in everyday life. Confluence views connection, belonging, and community engagement as essential components of helping young adults build fulfilling and independent futures.
