Uinta Enhances Brainspotting Services Trauma Treatment For Teens And Young Adults

Uinta Academy, a residential treatment center for teens and young adults assigned female at birth who struggle with relationships, attachment, or trauma, has long focused on trauma-informed approaches in its programming. Recently, all therapists at Uinta completed their Phase 2 training in Brainspotting Therapy (BSP), further enhancing their ability to support students in their healing journeys. This clinical addition offers enhanced support for parents of trauma survivors and mental health professionals pursuing advanced treatment methods. In conjunction with equine therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Equine Assisted EMDR, students at Uinta now benefit from more clinical depth to the array of trauma treatment resources. Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that taps into the body's innate ability to heal by identifying and processing trauma stored in the subcortical brain. Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting offers a non-verbal, body-based method for trauma processing. By guiding the client's eye movements to access specific points in their field of vision, therapists can help clients gently focus on and process traumatic experiences, allowing deep healing and emotional regulation. Brainspotting focuses on identifying "brainspots" in a client's visual field linked to emotional pain, allowing for a more flexible, client-led process. In contrast, EMDR employs structured protocols involving guided eye movements to help clients process traumatic memories. While both aim to lessen the emotional impact of trauma, Brainspotting is more exploratory, enabling clients to address underlying issues at their own pace. The choice between the two often depends on the individual's needs. "Our therapists recently completed Phase 2 training in Brainspotting, which has equipped them with more skills to offer a safe and gentle way to access and process trauma without retraumatization," stated Bridget Rhoten, LCSW, Clinical Director at Uinta Academy. "This technique is particularly beneficial for individuals who may find it challenging to articulate their trauma through words and offers an opportunity for deep, long-term healing." Integrating more comprehensive Brainspotting at Uinta Academy further enhances the program's suite of state-of-the-art therapeutic interventions. The benefits of Brainspotting include:
  • A non-verbal, body-based approach to trauma processing.
  • Effectiveness for those who struggle with traditional talk therapy.
  • Safe and gentle processing of trauma, minimizing the risk of re-traumatization.
  • Deep processing, leading to long-term emotional regulation.
  • Compatibility with various therapeutic modalities to enhance treatment outcomes.
Mental health professionals and parents of trauma survivors are encouraged to learn more about how Brainspotting can be incorporated into individual treatment plans.
