Valley View School, a therapeutic boarding school dedicated to supporting younger and middle teen boys, is thrilled to announce the expansion of its culinary program, designed to foster essential life skills through the art of cooking. During the summer session, science teacher and accomplished amateur cook Lisa Borlen worked with 5 boys in the Cooking Club. Lisa introduced students to the fundamentals of culinary arts, making various recipes of varying complexity. The initiative emphasized teamwork, organization, and the importance of healthy eating. The club offered a unique blend of education, personal development, and tasty food.
As the program transitioned into the school year, students continued their culinary journey with Head Chef Cindy Stanton, who led interested students in exploring various cooking techniques and cuisines. Through hands-on lessons, students learn to plan meals, organize food preparation, and work cooperatively in the kitchen.
“Cooking is not just about food; it’s about building confidence and learning to collaborate with others,” said Chef Cindy. “By working together, the boys develop important skills that extend far beyond the kitchen.”
In addition to cooking, the program also reinforces executive functioning by instruction and practice in keeping a clean and organized workspace. Students are taught to prepare and cook meals and clean up afterward, instilling a sense of responsibility and pride in their work. Valley View School is excited to provide this enriching experience, helping students gain practical skills while fostering a sense of community and personal growth.
