Valley View Schools Commitment To Community Service Expands Students Global Awareness Empathy And Self Worth

Valley View School, a therapeutic boarding school with over 55 years of experience supporting early adolescent boys, continues to build on its long history of integrating community service opportunities into its program structure. Some of these projects include having students cook and deliver meals to a local nursing home; participating in fundraisers to support humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine; and helping a local farmer load hay bales into the barn. Community service initiatives have long been a core component of Valley View School's therapeutic and educational model. Through both local volunteer opportunities and international service projects, Valley View students are discovering powerful connections between giving back, personal growth, and academic success.

Research consistently shows that service-learning experiences foster resilience, increase empathy, improve problem-solving skills, and strengthen a sense of purpose in adolescents. At Valley View, these benefits are amplified by the school's therapeutic environment, which helps students integrate service experiences into their understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

"Community service is not just about helping othersit's about our students discovering who they are, what they are capable of, and how they can make a difference," said Rick May, Executive Director. "When our boys engage in service, whether it's helping in a local food pantry or helping a local farmer, or participating in a service project during an international trip, they develop increased self-worth, stronger social-emotional skills, and a greater capacity for empathy."
Valley View's program includes:

Local Service Engagement: Volunteering at local nonprofits, raising money for social causes, and engaging in environmental stewardship projects around Massachusetts.
International Service Projects: Opportunities for students to travel abroad, immerse themselves in new cultures, and contribute to global service projects, thereby broadening their worldview and deepening their appreciation of diversity.
Integrated Therapeutic Reflection: Students process their service experiences in group and individual therapeutic settings, reinforcing self-awareness, responsibility, and confidence.

Students report feeling more connected to their peers, families, and communities after participating in service experiences. These outcomes align with national research showing that adolescents involved in service-learning demonstrate improved academic engagement, reduced risky behaviors, and strengthened mental health.

"Our students often come to us struggling with self-esteem and uncertainty about their future," added Jim Haupt, Clinical Coordinator. "Service work provides them with tangible proof that they matter, that they can make a positive contribution, and that their actions have real meaning."

By making community service a cornerstone of its therapeutic and educational model, Valley View School continues its longstanding mission to help boys build resilience, character, and a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the classroom.
