The Willows at Red Oak Recovery, located in Fletcher, NC, intentionally incorporates thoughtfully structured off-site experiences into its holistic, trauma-informed treatment model. These opportunities are designed to complement clinical work by giving clients space to practice emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills in supportive, real-world environments. Most recently, clients visited a local llama farm, enjoying a peaceful change of scenery and time in a calm, nature-centered setting.
Healing doesn't happen in isolation. It happens when women have the opportunity to reconnect with the world around them in safe, meaningful ways. When The Willows takes clients outside the traditional treatment setting, it gives them a chance to practice the skills they're building in therapy in real time. Whether it's regulating their nervous system around animals or simply experiencing joy in nature, these moments are clinically intentional and deeply valuable to the recovery process.
Experiential outings like this offer meaningful therapeutic benefits. Interacting with animals and spending time outdoors support nervous system regulation, reduce stress, and build confidence through safe, positive engagement. Stepping beyond the traditional treatment space allows women to apply coping strategies in ways that feel natural and empowering while strengthening their connection with themselves and others.
Recovery is not only about addressing challenges. It is also about rediscovering joy, curiosity, and a sense of possibility. Moments of lightness play an important role in sustainable healing. At The Willows, healing happens both within the campus community and through meaningful experiences just beyond it, supporting whole-person growth at every stage of the recovery journey.
