Saturday activities are a hallmark of the EDGE experience, days when the community comes together to explore the city and develop relationships. On January 14th, students from the EDGE Learning & Wellness Collegiate Community marshaled their energy and interest in helping by participating in activities with KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now). KEEN offers individuals with disabilities and their families a unique opportunity to exercise in a fun, safe and welcoming environment to build self-esteem and foster community inclusion.
EDGE students traveled to the University of Illinois at Chicago to provide hands-on support to athletes with disabilities. Students worked with the athletes to play basketball and swim. Through paired participation, EDGE students supported achievement and encouraged celebration of proud moments. In line with EDGE's commitment to learning and development of perspective, students were able to reflect on their own abilities while developing relationships with others. Eric*, a new student to EDGE remarked that "it was an opportunity to put others ahead of myself." When asked what he most enjoyed, Michael, another student remarked, "you get to develop a conversation [when you engage with people]. I love hearing what people have to say." As with most opportunities to contribute, the volunteers received benefits as well. Carissa Johnsen, a Therapeutic Life Coach at EDGE, added "it was very rewarding to work with KEEN and the individual children. You could tell that the athletes really enjoyed themselves and they truly brought joy to our day as well."
