Alpine Academy currently has an opening in one of the homes for a married couple to serve as Family Teachers to a group of 10 teenage girls. The role of Family Teacher is one of the most unique and crucial aspects to Alpine Academy’s success in changing the lives of students and families.
Family Teachers receive intensive, professional training in the Teaching-Family Model, which is the framework for treatment at Alpine Academy. The Teaching-Family Model is a trauma-informed, brain-based treatment modality that has been around for almost 50 years. It is one of the few modalities used in residential treatment that is recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the American Psychological Association as an evidence-based practice for changing the lives of struggling teens. And because Alpine Academy is accredited by the Teaching-Family Association, Family Teachers receive national certification within the Model.
Family Teachers live in each of the seven homes on the Alpine campus, located in a rural Utah community just 30 minutes from Salt Lake City, with up to 10 students per home. Family Teachers re-create a home and family dynamic where students learn and practice the social and emotional skills they need to be successful when they return to their own homes. This skill development happens during day to day activities such as homework, preparing and eating family meals, attending school and community functions, and even grocery shopping and going to doctor appointments, and facilitates learning and internalizing these skills. The work of the Family Teachers at Alpine Academy complements the work being done by licensed clinicians and certified educators to form a “treatment trifecta.”
Use of Family Teachers and the Teaching-Family Model ensures that Alpine’s practitioners (those that spend the most time with students) are professional and effective contributors to the treatment process.
