Elevations RTC, a leading residential treatment center for teens ages 13-18, proudly highlights the work of psychiatric staff members Dr. Michael Connolly, Medical Director, and Laurie Crookston, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
Dr. Michael Connolly has served as Medical Director since the opening of Elevations RTC. In his role as Medical Director, Dr. Connolly assists with coordinating medical care as well as in the development and integration of protocols. He helps to ensure that care is delivered in a consistent and optimal level across our campus.
“I work somewhat differently in this setting compared to many psychiatrists,” says Dr. Connolly. “Primarily, this is due to the fact that we are in a living environment, and feel that helping it to look and feel less institutionalized is important to the progress students’ desire. It is common to find me playing basketball or volleyball with the students. I've commonly been part of the summer triathlon training group.”
Along with his role as Medical Director, he is the primary psychiatric provider for two teams of residents at Elevations. In this role, he assists with the therapeutic process through psychotherapy and managing psychotropic medication.
Dr. Connolly almost never schedules appointments with the residents, and focuses more on walking the halls to be available on a more regular basis. He spends 3 days a week on campus.
“The amount of time I spend on campus is unusual for residential facilities, especially considering that we have another provider on campus 5 days a week in addition to weekend coverage,” comments Dr. Connolly.
Over the past 40 years, Laurie Crookston, the full-time psychiatric nurse practitioner at Elevations RTC, has worked in a variety of fields within mental health such as intensive care, psychiatry, and emergency. Before her role at Elevations, Crookston worked at her own private practice as a psychiatric nurse practitioner for eight years.
At Elevations, Crookston works closely with students and parents. On a typical day, she attends group therapy sessions, holds individual meetings with students, and ensures that all insurance and medical documentation for students is up to date.
“I feel privileged to be included with the treatment team in getting to work with the residents,” says Crookston. “I'm amazed at the intelligence, courage and strength of students as they work through difficult circumstances. Many of them learn inter-relational skills they will be able to use for the rest of their lives, impacting the people they come in contact with for good. I feel good about what students can accomplish attending Elevations RTC.”
