All Kinds of News for March 08, 2017
SUWS of the Carolinas is excited to welcome Jon Stang, LCSW, as the Primary Field Supervisor for group Bravo. Jon’s group is primarily serving adolescent males 14-17 years of age. Jon is a familiar face to the SUWS family and served as the group Bravo’s Field Supervisor from 2006 to 2012. Jon excels in working with the “difficult to reach” young man. His typical students are intelligent but struggling to achieve the academic goals they are capable of achieving. Often his students can be described as “acting in” rather than acting out. Common diagnosis for his group include: treating mood and anxiety disorders, depression, emerging personality disorders, identity disturbance, ADHD. Jon is no stranger to dealing with difficult family dynamics. Jon Stang is accepting clients in the month of March and the SUWS team is thrilled to have him back.
Jon’s extensive experience with adolescents in a variety of treatment environments began when he was an adolescent; at the age of 16, he landed his first professional outdoor leadership role, apprenticing as a guide for a Canadian canoe-expeditioning program. Jon’s belief in the transformational power of wilderness has only grown in the nearly thirty years since. Throughout his career, Jon has worked as a mountain guide, Wilderness EMT, Field Instructor, Parent Coach, Therapist, Director of Risk Management and Clinical Director. Jon's passion for helping adolescents and their families address their problems while cultivating their strengths is the common thread tying these experiences together.
After earning an undergraduate degree in Human Development from Prescott College (AZ), Jon worked as a frontline staff at a wilderness therapy treatment program in Utah. Jon went on to earn a Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Practice from Columbia University (NY) and has been a licensed social worker since 2004. His approach can be described as strengths-based and client-centered. Trained in sophisticated technique and sound practice, it’s Jon’s capacity to connect with help-rejecting clients that has distinguished his practice.
