Leah Madamba, MS, NCC, LPC and Nikki Preece, LCSW are both executive level, female leaders of InnerChange therapeutic programs - Vive Family Support Program and Fulshear Treatment to Transition. The two leaders leaned in this past January at the Annual National Association for Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) Conference and led a workshop titled "Lead Like a Girl: How to Raise Female Leaders". Nikki and Leah had the opportunity to lead a discussion on female leadership within organizations.
It was an interactive session where participants learned the statistics around the deficit in women leaders. Nikki and Leah discussed five areas that companies can focus on today to help better prepare their up-and-coming female leaders. Some of these recommendations included companies providing mentorship opportunities, teaching financial literacy and coaching on communication skills.
The conversation could not have been complete without talking about the role men can play in it. Leah and Nikki explored the importance of involving men in the empowerment of women as they can offer valuable insight and be effective mentors. They can also be terrific advocates for the women who work for and with them.
With the publication of Sheryl Sandberg’s bestseller Lean In, the conversation is progressing as professionals like Leah and Nikki stand up in the mental healthcare industry to talk about what women can do to take hold of their careers and “lean in” to opportunity.
