All Kinds of News for May 09, 2018
Elevations RTC, a co-educational residential treatment center for teens ages 13-18, celebrates and honors diversity on campus by taking extensive measures on a daily basis to create a culture in which students feel accepted and affirmed by others on a wide range of issues, including gender identity, sexuality, religious beliefs and political beliefs.
Upon arrival at Elevations RTC, students are placed within small teams with whom they attend therapeutic sessions. These teams are heterogeneous by design to help students build a supportive, accepting peer culture.
Another way that Elevations RTC builds an affirming culture on campus is calling students by the pronouns and name that they identify as their own. Additionally, in some cases, students who identify as transgender male or female may choose to be housed with the gender they identify with. However, this is done on a case by case basis depending on the needs of the student and their families.
“Sometimes families can be on a different page than their children in terms of acceptance and affirmation,” comments Judith Jacques, M.Ed., Executive Director of Elevations RTC. “We want to meet families where they are at and honor what is best for the student and their families. Progress is made only when we have a common goal in mind.”
By creating an affirming, accepting culture on campus, students at Elevations RTC are free to express their ideas and opinions in a safe, supportive setting.
“There are a number of outlets where students can let their voice be heard on campus,” says Jennifer Wilde LCSW, Executive Clinical Director at Elevations RTC. “For example, we have a student advisory board which meets with me on a monthly basis to share their ideas. Additionally, students take part in a leadership skills class in which they develop skills and habits that help them become instrumental in developing the positive culture on campus.”
In addition to promoting acceptance and affirmation amongst students, all staff members go through extensive diversity training and are encouraged to further their training by attending conferences led by outside experts. Elevations has also invited experts to campus to lead discussions and trainings with staff, students and families.
“We want to make sure the student voice is heard on all levels of our program - from the direct care staff all the way up to the leadership team,” comment Jacques. “It’s important to us to have everyone on board in creating a non-judgmental, supportive culture on campus.”
