TechieForLife (TFL), located in St. George, Utah, is pleased to be celebrating the two-year anniversary of opening their doors, June of 2016, to serve neurodiverse young adults. TFL began from a desire to address the needs of students with learning differences who experience a "services cliff" post-high school. It has grown into a program that identifies and builds on individual innate strengths to move them forward into adulthood and careers.
Students at TechieForLife, whether developing marketable tech skills to proceed directly into the workplace or receiving comprehensive support to pursue a college degree (or doing both), greatly benefit from connecting and belonging to a positive peer culture that they identify with. "We're finding that when our students start getting more of their social and emotional needs met outside of their home, they begin to find their own identities. Then educational and life skill development starts to come together for them," said Jason Grygla, Founding Partner and Executive Dirctor at TFL.
Jason and his wife Debbie adopted their son from foster care at age eight, who was then diagnosed with high functioning autism at age 13; they experienced firsthand the dread of what would happen to their son as he transitioned into adulthood and many legally mandated services for minors suddenly ended. Knowing their son had some great strengths among his many challenges, they were motivated to help him find a career path and not just settle for living with them his entire life. This motivated Jason to find business partners that understood the needs of emerging adults and who wanted to make a difference for this vulnerable population who learn differently. The resulting solution was a post-secondary school specifically designed for these unique learners.
Two years after beginning with their son as the first student, TechieForLife is growing and thriving. "There are few things more rewarding than mentoring others to find their place in life," said Jason. They are encouraged by the successes their students are experiencing.
