Those are two very simple words, "Vive Listens", and also very powerful when coming from previous Vive client Katie, when asked what made her experience with Vive successful. She simply said those two words. Katie came to Vive as a 16 year old who had just finished a wilderness program after struggling with school issues, impulsivity, poor peer relationships, family confict, depression, anxiety and substance use. She worked with Kera, the current Vive National Clinical Director as her Mentor.
When asked to elaborate on her statement that Vive listens, Katie stated that she felt heard for the first time in a long time when she started working with Kera. She reports that she was a very difficult client at the time and still very lost and rebellous. This did not deter Kera from getting through to Katie by being consistent with her, listening to her in a way that mattered, setting boundaries, and being very real and honest with her. Katie said she truly felt that Kera was her advocate. She also stated that going out into the community and going for a hike or other activity during their sessions allowed for their relationship to develop in a much more effective way than if they were in an office. As Katie progressed through the program, she also reports that what worked for her was having Kera there to call her out on some of her behaviors and then being very direct and honest in guiding her toward better choices. Katie felt safe and trusted Kera, so when she did make mistakes, she knew there would be no judgment, just support to help her learn from the mistakes and move forward with tools to make better choices.
Katie is currently studying for her masters and hopes to work for Vive one day. She is a firm believer in the Vive model and hopes to help families like hers in the future. Katie can't say enough about how important Kera became in her life. They still stay in touch and get together when their busy schedules allow.
