All Kinds of News for April 09, 2019
TechieForLife (TFL) has taken an innovative approach to help neurodiverse young adults, like those with Autism, find successful career paths. Their wrap-around support program was created to help students progress in all areas of their lives and succeed in rewarding careers. How is this approach working? Their first student, Eric Ostrom, recently accepted a salaried position at Yodel Technologies located in St. George, Utah.
Eric, brilliant at math, ironically found himself struggling to complete his Master’s program in applied mathematics. “I struggled with depression, lack of direction, and writing,” Eric said. With his most difficult class and a final project looming, Eric sought help. His educational consultant recommended a new program that had just opened: TechieForLife.
TFL welcomed him into their program and helped him complete his project. In fact, another TFL student even stepped up to tutor Eric through complex proof writing so that he could finally graduate, an integral step toward his new career.
For students like Eric, building confidence and receiving support like tutoring, mentoring and career coaching can help them get unstuck and find direction. “My mentors at TFL helped me figure out what I wanted to do. I had no idea. I just knew I liked math,” said Eric.
While at TFL, he also earned several computer programming certifications. Combining his love for math with his coding abilities is proving very valuable in his job at Yodel doing data analytics. Jordan Wood, Eric’s supervisor and operations manager at Yodel, said, “Eric has been dedicated in learning our process to become productive and is a great team player in our company.”
To other young adults who are struggling, Eric says, “Keep going and get the help you need because it can be hard to do stuff by yourself. Getting help even if it’s support can make a big difference.” Eric’s future looks promising. He continues to live near TFL, where he loves to give back, and occasionally still seeks advice.
