All Kinds of News for April 09, 2019
What an individual experiences in their life shapes how they interact with others. So, does this mean that all relationships have trauma? Possibly - but more than anything what it means is that human experiences shape their reactions, and reactions impact the other person's reactions, thus impacting the relationship. Dr. Daniel Siegel states in his book Parenting from the Inside Out, "Leftover issues or unresolved trauma or loss involve significant themes from the past, from repeated experiences early in life that were difficult and emotionally significant. These issues, especially if we have not reflected on them and integrated them into our self-understanding, can continue to affect us in the present" (Siegel, 2004). These themes are indicating that trauma is carried into all relationships.
Of course this looks different for each person given that no person shares the exact same life story as another person, but what this also indicates is the importance of each person in the world doing their own work to live a more rich and whole life. Often times when a child goes into treatment of some sort. parents witll hear a therapist say, "Okay, you need to be doing your own work too." This sometimes creates resistant parents, especially if they feel they have done their own work or leaves parents completely confused because they are unaware of how their reactions impact the thoughts and experiences of another.
The good news is, hope is not lost! Many parents just need a better understanding of how they are impacting others, where those experiences and reactions come from, and how to do it differently in the future. Sometimes the best way to experience and practice this is through an intensive. Vive Family Intensives offers an Intensive that meets the needs of each individual family, and serves one family at a time. This really allows each family the space to understand, ask questions, and practice breaking some of those old habits. Vive Family Intensives can be a game-changer in treating the family system by creating lasting change when the family is committed to the process.
