Young Adult Transitional Living
The young adult transitional living environments vary greatly. It is important to understand the philosophy that the program takes toward assisting the young adult to work towards their goals. For example, under what guidelines and agreements is the community formed and maintained? Is there a formal community or more of an informal community in terms of the living situation? How does the program approach opposition and/or non compliance - through control or through supportive mentoring or tightening of boundaries? Does the young adult need to be part of a supportive community 24/7 or can the young adult participant interact with an unsupervised world, and succeed with mentors or therapists in the community? Will the participant benefit from a curriculum to provide guideposts for life skills, social skills, or require a sober community or all of these combined?
Some programs have an intentional living community and others have individualized programs with some programming tied to the program. Is the therapy done through the program or on an outpatient basis? Is there group therapy? If yes, where is it located-- at a therapist’s office, at the transitional house? How personalized can the program get with the needs of the their students?
What level of supervision or support is needed for the young adult for social, emotional, life skills, and educational or vocational needs to achieve or discover what is needed? How is success measured by the participant and the program?
