Shortridge Launches Work-Study Program for Students

Shortridge Academy created and piloted a Work-Study Program in November 2020. It provided the students opportunities to gain valuable work experience, develop life skills, and earn wages as Shortridge Academy employees. Due to the success and popularity of this new program offering, Shortridge is excited to announce work-study is now a permanent program opportunity for students going forward. Students build knowledge, skills, and self-confidence, leading to success in education, in the workplace, and in life. In order to participate in this program, students must meet their existing academic, therapeutic, and community leadership expectations.
Options for work-study include being employed in Food Services or Facilities Maintenance. “What I love most about our Positive Youth Development philosophy at Shortridge is that students are exposed to real-life experiences while learning and benefiting from the support and scaffolding received by staff. The Work-Study Program is an excellent example of the school’s philosophy, as students formally apply with CV and references, interview for the position, and are hired – W-4 and all!” – Mik Oyler, Head of School & COO
“This was my first time applying for a job and being hired. It helped my confidence, kept me busy in a good way, and I liked being paid, too.” – SA’s first Work Study Student
In its 20th year, Shortridge Academy is considered the most normalized and progressive therapeutic boarding school in the country, whose strengths-based and authoritative approach successfully supports those students struggling with anxiety, depression, family dysfunction, and learning challenges.
