Solstice West RTC Implements MindUP Curriculum to Promote Academic Success

Solstice West RTC, a residential treatment center for females ages 14-18, has recently implemented the MindUP program in order to help students be more successful in the classroom. MindUP is a comprehensive classroom-tested, evidence-based curriculum framed around lessons that foster social and emotional awareness, improve psychological well-being and promote academic success. MindUP promotes and develops mindful attention to oneself and others. It also encourages students to accept the capacity of each member of the community in their growth as a human being and a learner.
The core curriculum of the MindUP practice includes deep breathing for 5 uninterrupted minutes per day. This helps students focus their attention and prepare for learning.
Students will learn about the different ways the brain functions and processes information. As students become more aware of the inner workings of their brains, they can become more observant of their own learning process and practice better self-regulation techniques. The team at Solstice is excited to begin using the MindUP program in the classroom. “We feel that this will help our students’ ability to self-regulate by starting the day with a dedicated time to participate in a grounding experience,” said Jane Peterson, LCSW, Clinical Director at Solstice West.
Students will be able to take the skills learned in the MindUP program to other facets of their day. The increased ability to self-regulate will help students continue to grow on their journey toward healing.
