Special Educational Offerings at Valley View School
In addition to emotional and behavioral issues, many boys who arrive at Valley View School have a history of academic failure and subsequent demoralization. The causes of these academic struggles range from the global effects of ADHD to the specific challenges stemming from dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. There is no question that academic struggles often create a feedback loop with emotional distress and behavioral dysregulation.
With 10 specially trained teachers and an exceptional special education professional, Valley View is designed to address these concerns and help students become effective learners.
Academic Director Kevin Sloan stated, “Our small classes and experienced teachers allow us to differentiate instruction, which helps meet the needs of our students. This, in turn, creates a positive academic trajectory.”
Students with more specific learning issues are referred to Carol Goodrow, Valley View’s special education expert. Carol has decades of experience in providing special education services to students in the Connecticut school system. She has master-level certification in both Orton-Gillingham and Wilson systems and is highly skilled in working with dyscalculia and dysgraphia. Carol consults with VVS teachers, teaches specialized classes, and is available for individual tutoring.
When asked about her experience at Valley View School, Carol said, “At Valley View, I have been encouraged to use my many years of experience, vast training, and insightful understanding of student learning to create individual paths for each child I work with. There is nothing more gratifying to me than seeing a child gain confidence along with achievement.”
The mission statement of Valley View School is to enable each boy to become the best version of himself; this can only happen when emotional, social, familial, and academic needs are addressed.
