STRīV’s Health & Wellness Program Helps Young Adults Soar

Orem, UT: STRīV is a transitional support program for young adults who are navigating the challenging landscape of independent living and the college experience. The health and wellness program at STRīV helps educate students on the integrated nature of the heart, mind, body, and spirit, recognizing the importance of a holistic approach to wellness.
While emerging adulthood is an exciting phase of life, college students often face a variety of challenges. For many, this is the first time being on their own, and it’s easy to fall into poor habits: not enough sleep, a steady diet of unhealthful foods, and little to no exercise are often at the top of the list. With motivation and guidance, however, students can fend off these counter-productive habits. Jill Yankey, the Health & Wellness mentor at STRīV, works with each student individually, and as a group, to address their sleep habits, food choices, and activity level. These choices impact a student’s mental health as well as their work/school performance. “When we sleep well, eat well, and stay physically active, we’re much more prepared for the challenges of the day,” Yankey says.
Taking the principle “hike more, worry less” to heart, Jill often schedules hikes or other outdoor activities for the staff and students at STRīV, taking advantage of “nature’s playground” all around the program. In addition, STRīV helps students recognize the connection between their habits and well-being by using Fitbits, focusing on sleep health, finding creative and traditional ways to stay physically active, teaching healthy cooking classes, providing access to a network of healthcare professionals, and more.
One student reports, “I like having the mentor encouraging me to stick to my exercise plan – one that I created for myself – and go on hikes. It really helps me manage my anxiety, and being able to enjoy the outdoors is a bonus! There’s something powerful about being in nature!”
When students get proper sleep, prepare and consume healthy foods, and stay physically active, the sky’s the limit.
