Trails Momentum Adds a New Low Ropes Course

As warmer weather approaches at Trails Momentum, a wilderness therapy program for young adults, a new low ropes challenge course is being created. Josh Rood, Outdoor Adventure Educator at Trails Momentum, is excited to be working with students on the construction of the course elements and their role in expanding the therapeutic experiences available to students at Momentum.
“I am thrilled and delighted to work with students to construct three new Low Ropes Challenge Course elements to add to the diversity of therapeutic activities we offer at Trails Momentum,” Josh states. “These elements offer a cornucopia of challenges that are safely designed and facilitated to address physical balance, goal setting, cooperation, collaboration, and problem-solving.”
Low ropes challenge courses include structures that are typically less than six feet off the ground. Through the creation of the course, students will experience Psychologist Bruce Tuckman’s Five Stages of Group Development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. The construction and the challenge itself facilitate practice in several key skills that fulfill the mission and philosophy of Trails Momentum. Students build confidence, overcome their fear of failure, and learn to communicate more effectively.
Students are contributing to the legacy of the program by helping build the course during their Peak Adventure weekends. Peak weekends often include service work, weekly chores, and adventure programming like paddling, climbing, and biking. Peak weekends give students the opportunity to work toward a specific goal and then reflect on their experience as part of their overall therapeutic journey.
With their new skills gained through the low ropes course challenges, Trails Momentum students will continue on their journey into adulthood prepared for its obstacles and excited for the future.
