Onward Transitions in Portland, ME is a small, independent, owner-operated program for bright, motivated, emerging adults in the final stages of learning to live on their own. OT supports actual sustainable independent living and autonomy from two city locations. Participants (members) never live with us; they live in their own apartments, scattered throughout the city. Membership is limited to 14. The average time with OT is 12 months. OT Members are between 18-29 and as part of a vibrant, engaging, and diverse community must commit to being kind, accepting and affirming. They seek acceptance and belonging. Member challenges include mild to moderate anxiety, depression and/or executive functioning challenges. Most have tried to live independently and have some insight into what support they need. OT employs a harm reduction model for various lifestyle choices. We are not a recovery program. Each member has their own schedule. Living independently members are working on custom goals with their therapist. OT provides weekly individual and group therapy, and family work. Members gather for meals, therapy, services and activities at two OT locations: the Pine House near the campus of USM, and The Hay, a historic suite in the arts district of Portland. Both are easily accessible by public transportation. Coordinators for wellness, experiential learning, career exploration, and education meet with members weekly. Our Neighbors service is offered to qualified OT members by invitation, generally after a year, as they transition beyond full-service membership.
