Young Adults Eligible to Earn College Credits and Pay for Open Sky Using College Savings

Open Sky Wilderness Therapy is excited to announce that young adult students may now earn college credits while at Open Sky and pay for their treatment and education using college savings. In partnership with Western Colorado University, Open Sky is offering students in the young adult program the opportunity to take a three-credit college psychology course: Nature and the Human Psyche. Developed by Dr. Melia Snyder, education director and clinical therapist at Open Sky, the course is designed to both provide an enriching academic experience and complement students’ therapeutic work in the field.
“The course’s robust curriculum combines independent study, group engagement, and experiential learning,” said Dr. Snyder. “By enrolling in this course, students will not only deepen their experience in wilderness but also strengthen their core capacity for attention, curiosity, awareness, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and connection.”
Many young adults at Open Sky face challenges with mental health, substance use, or independent living and have therefore had to postpone or forego attending college. Through Open Sky’s partnership with Western Colorado University, students may now pursue their educations while simultaneously receiving treatment.
“Now, our students don’t have the choose between their education and their overall well-being,” said Dr. Snyder.
Furthermore, students who enroll in the Western Colorado University course may apply college savings toward both treatment and education. When registered for three credit hours, families can use funds from 529 plans or AmeriCorps vouchers to pay for treatment at Open Sky and for Western Colorado University course credits.
“At Open Sky, we believe in educating the whole person – body, mind, heart, and spirit,” said Dr. Snyder. “We hope this unique opportunity will guide the lives and learning of the students we serve, prepare them to navigate unique and urgent challenges, and to positively contribute to society.”
