Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness, a nationally recognized outdoor behavioral healthcare program, has introduced a series of thoughtful updates designed to deepen the quality, consistency, and therapeutic engagement of its treatment model. These enhancements build upon the program's longstanding commitment to individualized support, relational continuity, and clinical excellence.
Blue Ridge's wilderness model now integrates structured returns to its Clayton bunkhouse, offering weekly opportunities for restoration and enrichment. Students benefit from hot showers, movie nights, creative intensives with local artists, family video calls, fitness center activities, and equine therapy. These intentional touch points foster emotional regulation, relational consistency, and experiential growth.
Members of the clinical and leadership teams are present in the field a minimum of four times each week, providing individual sessions, group facilitation, staff training, and observational support. This direct involvement strengthens therapeutic continuity and reinforces real-time alignment across the treatment team.
Within their first two weeks, students complete comprehensive clinical and psychiatric assessments. Psychiatric evaluations begin with an initial telehealth session and a full review of medications, followed by direct communication with families. In addition, in-person clinical assessments ensure diagnostic clarity, informed medical management, and targeted treatment planning. These early touchpoints establish a strong foundation for lasting therapeutic growth.
As one of the few single-owner-operated programs in the field, Blue Ridge provides a uniquely stable and consistent treatment environment. Owner Dan McDougal and Executive Director Danielle Hava, LCSW, are actively engaged each week in operations, training, mentoring, and staff support across all departments. Their involvement ensures program stability, clinical alignment, and responsive decision-making.
With staff-to-student ratios of 3:1 or lower, dedicated Field Managers, and opportunities for students to earn elective academic credits, Blue Ridge prioritizes individualized care and educational continuity. The program also holds a six-year accreditation from the Association for Experiential Education (AEE), reflecting the highest standards of safety, ethics, and program quality in outdoor behavioral healthcare.
These updates underscore Blue Ridge's commitment to refining program practices and enhancing outcomes for both students and their families.
