New research from Hopestream Community's annual member survey reveals that 56 of parents report their children accepted help for substance use disorders as a direct result of education and resources provided through the organization's holistic approach. This finding presents a stark contrast to National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data from SAMHSA showing that 93 of teens and young adults with diagnosed substance use disorders are treatment resistant.
The survey, conducted among over 200 parents navigating youth substance use challenges, highlights the potential impact of evidence-based family intervention strategies. Hopestream's results suggest that properly equipped parents can serve as effective catalysts for motivating change in young people struggling with substance misuse and addiction. This matters critically for families facing devastating circumstances where untreated addiction risks health complications, criminal justice involvement, and academic failure.
Hopestream's educational framework centers on the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) approach, a home-based intervention method that teaches parents and caregivers specific strategies to motivate young people toward accepting help. Unlike support groups that focus solely on emotional relief, Hopestream emphasizes active skill-building combined with comprehensive wellness resources to help parents regulate their nervous systems and implement new approaches more effectively with their children.
"We're continuing to refine and improve our services to keep chipping away at that 93 number," stated Cathy Cioth, Hopestream Co-Founder. "Our holistic approach recognizes that even highly dysregulated parents who are new to the struggle of having a child misuse substances can make dramatic changes in themselves and their kids in a short period of time."
