Supporting Adolescents Through Summer Transitions with Structured, Assessment-Driven Care at Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness

The transition into summer often marks a shift in structure for adolescents, which can exacerbate existing challenges related to mood, behavior, family conflict, and engagement in daily life. For teens who are already struggling, the loss of routine and increased unstructured time can lead to further dysregulation and disconnection.

Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness, an outdoor therapeutic program located in the mountains of North Georgia, works with adolescents ages 12–18 who would benefit from a more structured and clinically integrated level of care during these transition periods. The program is designed to provide stabilization, skill development, and increased insight through a combination of outdoor immersion, consistent routine, and ongoing clinical support.

A core component of the model is early assessment. Each student participates in a psychiatric evaluation within the first week of enrollment, followed by a comprehensive psychological assessment within the first two weeks. This process supports diagnostic clarity, informs individualized treatment planning, and allows for more targeted clinical interventions from the outset.

Students participate in a structured weekly routine that integrates outdoor living with therapeutic support. Daily expectations include hiking, group participation, and engagement in responsibilities that promote accountability and routine. In addition, students return to a base setting each week for creative programming, hot showers, and continued clinical work. This balance allows for both challenge and regulation, supporting the development of coping skills in real time.

Clinical and leadership staff maintain a consistent presence in the field throughout the week, providing individual sessions, group facilitation, and ongoing support to both students and field instructors. This model allows for real-time observation and intervention, rather than isolating therapy from the student’s day-to-day experience.

Family involvement is integrated throughout the program. Parents participate in weekly therapy calls, receive regular communication from the clinical team, and have access to structured support resources. This approach is designed to support changes within the broader family system and improve the likelihood of sustained progress post-discharge.
