As students prepare for college, families often enter a transition of their own. The day-to-day role changes, the distance feels different, and many parents are left trying to understand how to stay involved without overstepping.
This summer, the George Washington University is offering parents, family members, and student supporters access to a dedicated online support group hosted by Other Parents Like Me. Created specifically for GW families, the private group is designed to help participants navigate the emotional and practical realities of supporting a college student.
Launching ahead of the fall semester, the group will create space for conversations around student independence, communication, mental health and wellbeing, academic stress, and family adjustment. It offers parents and supporters a place to reflect, ask questions, hear from others in similar situations, and better understand their evolving role.
The initiative reflects a shared understanding that student well-being is shaped not only by campus resources but also by the stability and support students receive from the people closest to them. By investing in a dedicated space for families, GW is helping parents and supporters feel better equipped to respond with clarity, perspective, and steadiness during a pivotal stage of the student journey.
