Healing Through Honesty: Why Oxbow Uses Clinical Polygraphs in Teen Treatment

Oxbow Academy, a leader in sex-specific residential treatment for teen boys, is highlighting its use of clinical polygraphs in two new podcast episodes. Hosted by therapist Tiffany Herlin, LCSW, and featuring Shawn Brooks, Executive Director of Oxbow, and Jared Rockwood, Polygraph Examiner, these episodes demonstrate how a polygraph can be a therapeutic tool, rather than a punishment. They offer parents guidance on their son's problematic or compulsive sexual behaviors. The podcasts explain the difference between clinical and forensic polygraphs. At Oxbow, polygraphs are part of a compassionate, trauma-informed approach. This safe process helps teens feel comfortable being honest. By gaining a clear, data-driven understanding of the problem, therapists can develop more effective treatment plans, resulting in faster progress and more positive changes. The use of clinical polygraphs at Oxbow Academy helps teens and families heal and rebuild trust. As Executive Director Shawn Brooks states, "You've probably heard the saying, 'You’re only as sick as your secrets.' And it’s true- you don’t heal from secrets; you heal from the truth. You can’t grow as a person when you’re weighed down by secrets because they poison you.” By using this method, Oxbow empowers boys to take responsibility, address underlying trauma, and work with their families toward a healthier future.
