Valley View School Enhances Social Skills Through Play

Valley View School is proud to announce that a new therapeutic program has been implemented to enhance students’ social skills and interpersonal relationships. Recognizing the challenges many students face in their peer interactions, clinicians Rhonda Albert, MSW, and Arianna Marino, MSW, have introduced a creative and engaging board game therapy group that fosters socialization and communication in a fun, non-threatening manner. Additionally, Albert and Marino have been encouraged by research demonstrating that board game play can improve ADHD symptoms, concentration, short-term memory, and behavioral problems.

This innovative group meets three times per week and uses structured board game sessions as a tool to promote cooperation, communication, and critical thinking among students. The program creates a supportive environment where boys can develop essential social skills such as following rules, taking turns, and engaging in positive peer interactions. These activities make learning enjoyable, build confidence, and guide the development of meaningful connections with classmates.

“The interactive and enjoyable nature of play therapy not only enhances the boys’ engagement but also facilitates the practical application of social skills in a supportive setting,” said Ms. Albert. Ms. Marino added, “The game-based nature of the group defuses resistance to therapy; the boys are eager to participate, which is a huge benefit. Sometimes -- for kids --  the best therapy doesn’t feel like therapy.”

This board game therapy group represents Valley View School’s commitment to providing innovative and effective therapeutic interventions that address the unique needs of each student. Insights gleaned from these sessions are often further developed in individual therapy, ensuring that students receive comprehensive and holistic care.
