Short-term Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs) for teens offer specialized support for emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. These facilities, tailored to individual needs, may feature specialized tracks targeting addictive behaviors, eating disorders, mental health disorders, or dual diagnoses alongside focused clinical assessment and licensed clinicians. Often situated in homes that diverge from Hollywood portrayals, these residential treatment centers emphasize clinical oversight, different types of combinations of evidence-based therapies or therapeutic interventions, like adventure therapy or other types of experiential therapy (skiing, snowboarding, surf, art, equine, music, etc.), which all add up to a structured environment with different modalities to assess, stabilize, and treat the participant.*

A successful short-term residential program works closely with and incorporates family systems clinical work, regardless of geographic location. These treatment providers recognize the value and importance of working with the family to develop and grow new skills to aid the teen's transition back to public or private school and home environments. This blog delves into nine key outcomes from a short-term residential treatment program.

How is the length of stay determined at a short-term residential treatment provider?

The average length of stay in a short-term residential treatment program varies depending on several factors, including the individual's specific needs, the severity of their condition, the treatment goals, insurance vs. out-of-pocket payment, the treatment plan's goals, and the facility's policies. However, short-term residential programs typically last from a few weeks to a few months (30 to 90 days). This timeframe allows for intensive treatment and stabilization while also aiming to facilitate a smooth transition back to the individual's home or community environment or a lower level of care like a partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP), or outpatient therapist with wrap-around services like a mentor, coach(s), life skills, sober coach, tutors, or a new small school.

It's important to note that the length of stay may be adjusted based on ongoing progress assessments, the individual's readiness for discharge, and when insurance is paying for the stay, which is deemed a medical necessity. For many of these programs, a neuropsychologist might be on-site or in partnership with the program to conduct a full evaluation.   These assessments become part of the treatment and transition planning for the teen at the short-term RTC. (PRO-TIP: A complete Neuropsych assessment is very helpful to a school system or private school to assist the school with planning for the post-treatment.)

The general length of stay is determined by the insurance carrier, and treatment goals and plans for those goals are ideally created before enrollment. This could mean obtaining a neurospcyh or different formal and informal assessments once a teen has entered the program. (Learn more about Psychological Testing in this blog.

Finding success will be multifaceted, not a straight line, and will involve considering the diverse needs of the teens and their family systems. Short-Term RTCs are not a quick fix; it might be a short assessment with some stabilization, skills, and more, and success might have varying degrees of:

1️⃣  Mental Health Symptoms: Success can be measured by a reduction in the severity of mental health symptoms that initially led the teen to the RTC. This might include decreased depression, anxiety, or behavioral issues.

2️⃣  Enhanced Coping Skills: Teens should leave the RTC equipped with improved coping mechanisms to manage stress, regulate emotions, and navigate challenges effectively.

3️⃣  Better Interpersonal Relationships: Success involves building healthier relationships with family members, peers, and authority figures. This might include improved communication skills, conflict resolution abilities, and empathy.

4️⃣  Academic Progress: For teens attending school within the RTC, success could mean making academic progress despite the challenges they may have faced previously. This might involve catching up on missed coursework or improving study habits.

5️⃣  Increased Self-Esteem and Confidence: Success is evident in a boost in the teen's self-esteem and confidence. They should leave the RTC with a greater sense of self-worth and belief, combined with recent experiences in treatment and the ability to overcome obstacles.

6️⃣  Development of Life Skills: Success involves acquiring practical life skills essential for independent living. This might include skills such as budgeting, time management, cooking, and job readiness.

7️⃣  Family Reintegration: Success includes a successful reintegration into the family unit. This might involve improved family communication, strengthened bonds, and strategies to maintain family communication post-discharge.

8️⃣  Continued Support and Follow-Up: Success extends beyond discharge, with ongoing support and follow-up from the RTC to ensure the teen maintains progress and has access to community resources. The family might contract with an aftercare mentor so that the parents can support the new skills.  The teen might have a dedicated coach who has been through treatment or has expertise in both in-person and virtual services. 9️⃣  Reduced Risk of Relapse: Success involves reducing the risk of relapse into previous maladaptive behaviors and might mean a lower level of care rather than outpatient services like PHP or IOP.

In conclusion, short-term teen Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs) for teens provide crucial support for individuals facing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. With tailored programs that offer specialized tracks, clinical assessment, and diverse therapeutic interventions, these centers prioritize progress in a structured environment. Regardless of geographic location, all short-term residential programs emphasize collaboration with families to foster growth and develop essential skills for successful reintegration into home and school settings. Various factors, including treatment goals, insurance coverage, and ongoing assessments, typically determine the length of stay in these programs. Success is multifaceted, encompassing improved mental health symptoms, enhanced coping skills, better relationships, academic progress, increased self-esteem and confidence, life skills development, successful family reintegration, continued support, and a reduced risk of relapse. Success at a short-term RTC ultimately means that the teen and the family leave the program with the tools, skills, and support necessary to thrive in their home, school, and community environments.
